Freshmen Coaches

Coach Popa is entering his 5th season at Western, and this will be his second on Varsity offensive as receivers coach. Previous to that Joel was the defensive coordinator and coached the freshman wide receivers. Coach Popa started his coaching career with the Walled Lake Braves in 2000 and 2001. In 2002 he was one of the founding members of the St. Williams CYO football program and served as their defensive coordinator. In addition to coaching football a Walled Lake Western, Coach Popa also coaches the high schools in-line roller hockey team.

An Alumni of Central Michigan University and Joel made the football team as a walk on 1978. Currently a sales rep for Superior Uniform Group, Coach Popa lives in Wixom with his wonderful wife Tricia. His son, John, is a junior split end for the Warriors. He also has a step daughter Kristen Tobias and one grandchild Elliot.
