Warriors finish the season 8-4

Walled Lake Western saw its season come to an abrupt end Friday night as the Chemics from Midland racked up 23 first-half points and rolled to a 43-0 victory over the Warriors in the Division 2, Region 2 final held at Walled Lake Western.

Both teams had trouble holding on to the ball early on as they each turned the ball over on fumbles in their first possessions, but it was after a Midland punt pinned Western back at its own 2-yard line that the first score of the evening happened. With Western quarterback Sam Johnson back in the shotgun formation, an errant snap allowed the Chemics to drop Johnson in the end zone for a safety giving Midland a 2-0 lead with 4:39 left in the first quarter.

After Western's free kick, Midland took the ball at its own 36-yard line and drove 64 yards in just under four minutes, capped by a 10-yard run by Christian Gordon to put Midland up 9-0 with 57 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Warriors just couldn't seem to put anything together, offensively or defensively, Friday night as the high winds and cold temperature seemed to stifle their potent passing attack. In addition, the Chemics punishing ground game continued to churn out yards.

The loss put the Warriors final tally for the 2018 season at 8-4 while the win by Midland earned the Chemics the right to move on next week against Mona Shores in one of the Division 2 semifinal contests on the way to Ford Field.
