Warriors improved to 3-1

Walled Lake Western’s football team clearly illustrated why they are called “Road Warriors” as they clobbered previously undefeated Waterford Mott, 52-13, Friday.

Western got off to a quick start in the first quarter, forcing a three-and-out on Mott’s first possession. As soon as Western got possession, Sam Johnson hooked up with Abdur Rahmaan-Yaseen on a 16-yard touchdown pass as Western led 7-0.

Aiden Jennings drilled a 41- yard field goal on Western’s second possession to give the Warriors a 10-0 margin with 1:47 remaining in the first quarter.

Mott got on the board with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Castillo Jr. to Quillen Howze. The Corsairs trailed 17-7 at half-time.

In a showdown for first place in the Lakes Valley Conference, the Warriors exploded for three touchdowns in the third quarter to take a commanding 38-7 lead.

Western scored on offense, defense and special teams as they raised their record to 3-0 in the LVC. Junior CJ Brown proved to be a one-man wrecking crew as he scored four touchdowns for the Warriors.

The junior safety had a pick six early in the second quarter. Brown picked off a Mott pass at the one yard line and scampered 100 yards for the touchdown to give Western a 17-0 margin before Mott scored.

“The pick six was nice,” said Brown. “It really set the edge for our team and gave momentum to our offense. It really pushed us over the edge because we knew it was going to be a hard game.”

Brown’s 26-yard touchdown scamper behind his big brother Spencer’s block capped a quick six play 80-yard drive to open the second half for a 24-7 margin.

After an interception by Rahmaan Yassen at the Western 45 yard line, Brown blasted in from two yards out to give the Warriors a commanding 31-7 lead with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter.

The opportunistic Warrior defense got the ball back thanks to Rahmaan-Yaseen’s second interception of the game. Johnson then capped a 43-yard drive on a keeper from the 14 yard line to give Western a 38-7 margin at the 5:04 mark.

For good measure, Brown grabbed an onside kick with 5:39 remaining in the fourth quarter and scampered 53 yards to the end zone for the 52-13 final.

Western head coach Alex Grignon was elated with the performance. “We made the game plan simple so that our kids could play fast. Typically, we stay out of the paper and whatnot. Everybody picked against us this week and we wanted to remind everybody what Walled Lake Western is all about.”

Brown had a career night with 46 yards rushing (two touchdowns), 100 yard pick six and a returned an onside kick 53 yards for a touchdown. Johnson had a big night, hitting nine of 13 (one touchdown) and rushed for 24 yards (one touchdown.) Rahmann Yaseen had two interceptions to go with five catches good for 124 yards (one touchdown.)

Western (3-0 LVC, 3-1) will host Walled Lake Northern (1-2 LVC, 1-3) in the annual “Warriors for Warriors Pink Out” game on Friday. Mott (3-1 LVC, 3-1) will host Waterford Kettering (0-4 LVC, 0-4) in a rivalry game on Saturday.
