Under slippery conditions on the road and in the rain, Walled Lake Western played with urgency and precision Friday in easily dispatching Waterford Mott 38-7 to ruin the Corsairs’ homecoming in KLAA North football action.

Western, ranked No. 3 in the state in Division 2, imposed its’ will on host-Mott from the opening quarter on both sides of the ball. The Warriors went ahead 23-7 at the half and never took their foot off their opponents’ neck the entire night.

“Considering the weather conditions, we played very well,” Western head coach Mike Zdebski said. “Everyone fought through the rain to still catch the ball, throw the ball, hold on to the ball and tackle. I can’t complain.”

Senior tailback Jalen Marshall delivered a career outing toting the rock for Western (5-1), rushing for 118 yards and four touchdowns. Marshall’s first scoring run (from 2 yards out) ended the half and his final trip across the goal line (4 yards) wrapped up the evening’s offensive display. He managed to sandwich touchdowns of 3 and 5 yards respectively in between them.

“The offensive line worked real hard tonight, they gave me a lot of open seems to run through,” Marshall said. “We all came to play.”

Prior to Marshall’s heroics, the Warriors got on the board as a result of senior quarterback Johnny Tracy’s arm and junior kicker Zak Kempster’s foot. Kempster’s 33-yard field goal opened the game’s scoring in the first quarter and was quickly followed by Tracy’s 48-yard touchdown bomb to senior flanker Kam Ford (105 yards receiving) streaking down the right sideline. Tracy (Princeton) threw for 180 yards on the day.

“This was a great team win,” Tracy said. “We battled the elements and came out on top.”

Mott (3-3) could never find a rhythm Friday, stifled by a swarming Western defense. Jack Dodge intercepted his fourth pass of the campaign from the Warriors’ secondary. The Corsairs’ lone touchdown of the game was on a 20-yard scoring dash by Keith Fields.

Chris Fahr, Mott’s head coach, was honest in his assessment of the night’s activities.

“We got our butts kicked, plain and simple,” he said. “Give it up to Western, they out-coached us, they out-played us and they out-hustled us.”
