WLW improves to 4 - 0

The more things change, the more it seems they stay the same for WL Western. For the first time this fall, Cody White didn’t start at quarterback. Johnny Tracy started under center for the Warriors and the results were the same. Tracy tossed four touchdown passes, including two to Cody White, as Western rolled by city rival WL Central 43-8.

After holding the host Vikings to a three and out to start the game, the offensive line went to work leading a 68-yard drive on seven plays capped off by a 6-yard TD run by senior running back Jalen Marshall.

Marshall’s touchdown run came thanks to a huge block by massive tackle Robert Hudson. The 6’8” 305 pound road-grader who will be going to Purdue next fall opened a big hole as the Warriors went up 7-0 at the 7:55 mark of the first quarter.

“I left everything on the field tonight and gave it everything I had,” said Hudson as he hoisted the Walled Lake City Championship trophy. “We need to continue to get better and cut out the mistakes.”

The stout Warriors turned in another outstanding performance by dominating the line of scrimmage and spending a lot of time in Central’s backfield stuffing the run. The defense chipped in with an interception as defensive back Dylan McGorisk picked off a Viking pass and returned it 20 yards to give the Warriors a 14-0 lead with 6:07 left in the first quarter.

WL Western took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter as the defense went back to work putting pressure on Viking quarterback Jack Gulvas. Tracy then found Cody White in the corner of the end zone from 22 yards out to give Western a 20-0 lead.

Western surprised the Vikings by giving for the two-point conversion as holder Dylan McGorisk passed to senior Bryce Stuart for a 22-0 lead. The Warriors capped a 70-yard drive late in the second quarter as Tracy tossed a 30-yard TD pass to Kameron Ford to give the Warriors commanding 29-0 lead at halftime.

White scored again for the Warriors on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Johnny Tracy with 7:09 left in the third quarter for a 36-0 margin. Tracy said it felt good to get the start. “It was great to get back after missing the first three games. It’s great to be part of Western football and look I look forward to the playing Waterford Kettering next week in the homecoming game.”

WL Central got on the board with 3:50 left in the game as Damien Felton scored. Quarterback Jack Gulvas passed to Parker Cole on the two-point conversion for the 43-8 final.

“It was nice to see Johnny come out and play tonight,” said a happy Head Coach Mike Zdebski. Defensively we played better, as we didn’t give up any big plays which were a point of emphasis this week.

Johnny Tracy was solid in his debut at quarterback for Western (3-0) completing 18 of 28 passes (including four TD passes). Cody White had a big night receiving with seven catches for 139 yards and two TD’s. Junior linebacker Zak Kempster led the defense with seven tackles.
