Cody White leads WLW on game-winning drive Walled Lake Western 33, Canton 30

CANTON -- Cody White is sure getting used to his quarterback gig.

The wide-receiver-turned-quarterback led Walled Lake Western on a nine-play, 68 drive late in the fourth quarter to help the Warriors beat Canton 33-30 on Thursday night. The final play on the drive was a perfect pass from White to wide receiver Justin Thomas, who caught the ball in the back left corner of the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown with 37 seconds to play.

Canton made a strong attempt to move down field from its own 38 yard line on the next drive but could not hit a 47-yard field goal as time expired.

It was White's second game filling in at quarterback for Western (2-0), as starter Johnny Tracy has been out since the start of the season with an injury. White finished with 190 yards on 9-for-21 and 2 touchdowns -- both of which were to Thomas.

White also had 101 yards rushing and two more touchdowns on the ground.

Canton had a strong rushing attack, accumulating 341 yards along the way. Canton scored on consecutive running plays to start the second half, with a 60 yard run by Colin Troup and a 51-yard run by Steven Walker.

Canton running back Markus Sanders left the game with an apparent injury in at the end of the first half and did not see the field again.

FINAL: Walled Lake Western 33, Canton 30

Less than 20 seconds into the quarter, Western found the end zone thanks to a 60-yard run by Cody White that have every juke and cut he could make to find the end zone.

Canton responded by a hitting a 33-yard field goal on its next drive that lasted 12 plays.

The Warriors started the next drive with 4:27 on the clock and, on the ninth play of the drive, Cody White threw a ball into the corner of the end zone to his Justin Thomas in stride for a 29-yard touchdown with 37 seconds left.

Canton started the next drive with the ball on its own 38 with 31 seconds left and managed to get to the Western 30 yard line and call a timeout with four seconds left. However, the 47-yard field goal fell short and Western won.

END 3: Canton 27, Walled Lake Western 20

After Walled Lake Western went 3-and-out to open the half, Canton burst into the lead with a 60 yard run by Troup on the Chiefs' first play from scrimmage.

After another 3-and-out by Walled Lake Western, Canton scored on its first play of the next drive again, this time with Walker going 51 yards for the scoring. The score gave Canton 14 points, 111 rush yards and a 27-20 lead on just two offensive plays.

Walled Lake Western responded with a five-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 46-yard run by Jalen Marshall.

HALF: Walled Lake Western 14, Canton 13

Canton ended the first quarter at the Walled Lake Western 5 yard line, scoring two plays later on a 1-yard Thornton run.

Walled Lake Western attempted to get a good drive going but was intercepted on a pass to the 23 yard line. Canton ended up having to punt on the ensuing drive.

The Warriors took the lead back, 14-13, on a 59-yard touchdown pass from White to Justin Thomas.

Canton missed a 38-yard FG to end the half.

END 1: Walled Lake Western 7, Canton 6

Canton and Western traded 3-and-out drives to open the game and then traded scoring drives.

Canton struck first as quarterback Jack O'Donnell found Julian Thornton for a 51 yard touchdown pass. However, the point after missed.

Walled Lake Western responded with a pass from quarterback Cody White to Kameron Ford for a 56-yard gain to the 5. On the next play, White picked up a bad snap along the ground and scored after rolling to his right.
