DEVELOPMENTAL AREAS

1.      Character Development. Varsity football players will perform three hours of community service as a mandatory off-season activity.  During the season, the team will spend one Saturday volunteering for a local need.  During the school year, citizenship performance is monitored through formal and informal discussion with faculty.

What we do: book reading about leadership and the importance of attitude, guest speakers on leadership, team building sessions, issued responsibilities away from football, Wixom and Walled Lake road clean up, letter writing, City of Wixom, Elementary reading program, middle school officiating, United Way, Lakes Area Hawks Football program, etc.

Awards: Oakland County Volunteers of the Month 1999, Steve Spicer Memorial Award presented by the MHSFCA 2013, 2006 and 2001, Lakes Area Most Wanted 2002, and MHSFCA Fraser Award 2003 and 2008.

 

2.      Academic Development.  Grade monitoring through out the year will enable us to determine who needs help in the classroom. Study hall is offered year around in the Media Center. 

What we do: football counselor, in school tutoring program, ACT Prep, 5th and 6th Hour Advanced Academic Encouragement, Study Hall, Clearing House Preparation, Academic Awards, and year around academic monitoring.

Awards: 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2008, 2006, and 1995 Academic All State Football Team, 1999 Top Ten All Academic, 2000 Top Ten All Academic, 2001 All Academic #5, 2002 All Academic #12, 2003 All Academic #6, 2004 All Academic #6, 2005 #5 All Academic, 2007 #6 All Academic, 2009 #5 All Academic.

 

3.      Football Development.  We will develop our players physically in the weight room.  The core lifts of the bench, squat, power clean, and dead lift will enable us to compete for a championship yearly. Speed and power development takes place through form running and plyometrics. We will challenge the athletes to improve their mental toughness by expecting 100% effort and intensity daily.

What we do: team doctor, team motivational specialist, football power lifting coach, BFS strength and speed development program, 5th and 6th Hour Advanced Weights Football Class, Summer Offensive/Defensive Camps, Spring Youth Clinic, Future Warrior Clinic, Youth Football Night, 5th Quarter Club, Leo Folsom Award, Summer Warrior Club, Blue Chip Testing, Squat Fest, Lift A Thon, Mr. Western Award, and Winter/Spring Morning Agilities.

Awards: State Champions-1999 and 1996, State Runner Up-1992, Regional Champions-2011, 2001, 1999, 1996, and 1992, District Champions-2012, 2011, 2001, 1999, State Playoffs-2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1997, 1996, 1992.

           

4.      Family Participation. We want family to be important at WLW. Through various activities we will open the door to communication and use activities to bring our families together. We want football to be an exciting and positive experience at Western.

What we do: Spring Parents Meeting, Blue/Silver Scrimmage and Picnic, Mom’s Football Class, End of Season Banquet, Booster Club Meetings, Post Game Meals, Annual Golf Outing, Parents Night Game, and Senior Night Game.
